1988/89 Burton “Triangle” Air Vintage Snowboards 3-pack with all Prototype Colorways (purple/pink/green)
$12,500 – 3 board package price (add $80 to the cost to have the work done before shipping)
Add $200 for period correct bindings and original hardware
The 1989 Burton Air was the first board in the Burton line-up with a freestyle application and a turned up tail thanks to the growing popularity of freestyle boards from the West Coast from companies like Sims and Barfoot. Jake was slow to embrace freestyle boards after years of dominating the alpine race market, but Jake has always had a positive vision for snowboarding, and that vision and commitment has been instrumental in making snowboarding what it is today (Thanks Jake!). In this 3-pack of boards, there are three colorways. The stock color is the purple “Air” logo in Burton Air, with a production date of Aug. 1988. The pink Air board was made in Jan. 1988, and the green Air board is unknown but has a very interesting serial number of 999-999999, or if upside down and backwards, it’s 666-666666. Hmmm… Outside of the early production of the first Burton Freestyle boards and the three different color prototypes, the boards are rare in most collectors’ eyes.
Condition: The purple board’s top sheet is in good condition with sings of use. The reason it is not graded higher is there are two deep half moon gouges in the top sheet near the front binding mount on the left side. The base is in good condition with signs of use, several scratches, and rusty edge. A $50 professional tune up would make this boards base look new again.
The pink colorway board’s top sheet is in excellent condition with only minor scuff and it’s only been mounted in the regular foot position with Burton plate bindings. At one time, it has the stock black deck mat. The base is in good to excellent condition with sings of a full tune and wax. Edges are sharp and shiny.
The green colorway board’s top sheet is in good to excellent condition with very little if any binding rash. It has the stock black stomp pad and three Go Skate stickers from NorCal specialty shop, “Go Skate”, which produced several high profile pros back in the day. Is this one of their boards!? We don’t know, but the unique and out of the ordinary serial number of 999-999999 and Go Skate stickers says there is a good chance it was a pro’s board. There is also remnants of the Burton Air board sticker of this exact board but about two thirds of it is missing on the tail. The rest could be removed without any discoloration of the top sheet due to the ABS top sheet used in production. With all stickers removed, this board’s top sheet could be considered in excellent condition. The base is in fair condition with signs of use, multiple scratches, and gouges along with a two and a half inch section of missing P-Tex that could be base welded and a professional full tune could be done to make the base look brand new again.
Collectors, please note, Salty Peaks Snowboard Shop has a mission statement to document and preserve snowboard history and does not engage in the selling of vintage snowboards from the Utah Snowboard Museum. Most of the boards on this site are privately owned and priced according to rarity and condition. In most cases, they are not intended to sell but to educate fellow collectors of the more rare and hard to find snowboards out there, along with potential value of such boards. Prices are set to discourage purchase, but as time catches up to value, these prices may not seem so far off in the future. If you are interested in selling a board of this caliber, please contact the curator of the Utah Snowboard Museum, Dennis Nazari. If you are in need of period correct bindings, parts, or hardware, also contact the museum for availability; [email protected] or 801-273-8770 Happy hunting and enjoy!
