Winterstick 1980 Vintage Swallow Tail Blue Snowboard

With over 1,000 vintage boards on display at Salty Peaks Snowboard Specialty Shop we are often asked “what’s the oldest snowboard?” to answer, we ask “what do you consider a snowboard? Does it have something you hold in your hand like a rope or handle? Or is it a freehand ridden board, like a surfboard? If your answer is a freehand powder surfboard, the first was Wayne Stoveken, who in 1972 rode the first winterstick powder surfboards in the Wasatch Range” Winterstick founder Dimitrije Milovich was on that hike in the East coast surfer turned inventor started the Winterstick company right here in Salt Lake City. The first production boards were offered in a roundtail and swallowtail models. Early boards had the powder brake, that stopped a runaway board if you fell off of it while riding. The base skeg helped the board track straight in deep powder, in 1975 Demetrije was using metal edges and p-tex bases. By 1980 “sticking” was what the cool kids were doing as an underground movement had been created around the snow surf company called Winterstick.

This über rare blue superlight swallow tail was some of Dimitrije Milovichs’ finest work for surfing powder. In recent years Dimitrije has been responsible for design and and building of carbon helicopter parts for Lance Armstrong’s Tour de France bike frames. If Dimitrije ever decided to build a snow surf board again they would be the best in the world.

The only swallowtail rare than this is the black superlight and the pre production red swallowtails.  This blue swallowtail is in good condition, comes with the white urethane powder skeg with functional snow brake with the original brake leash. The printed serial # indicates a 1980 year production with the more rounded traction bumps. This board is missing the original binding strap but the strapmounts are still intact. There are only 3 missing traction bumps which is a rarity in itself.

The base is in good condition with a wayjab still applied to the base which makes it difficult to see minor scratches. The worst damage to the base is a 1” x ½” missing piece of ptex right at the top with slight delamination in the same area. The powder skeg is straight and complete.  The brake is fully functional with an open spring in place.

The topsheet is in good condition with logos and stamp clear and readable. There is noticeable wear from use under binding foot placement where original finish has worn off. Tip and tail have no impact damage no vacuum bumps or indentations.

A rare board in any condition.
