Burton Vintage 1977 Londonderry BB1 Prototype Snowboard
This board was acquired in the late 90’s from a ski shop in Connecticut the owner and seller sold me four boards and a box of old Burton parts claiming to be Burton’s first dealer in Connecticut and that two of the boards were bought right out of Jake’s trunk when he came calling for dealers. This board was Jakes board that he had been riding and solid it to the new dealer shortly after this the wider boards were coming out so the dealer never sold the narrow boards and eventually put them in storage until he was closing his store at which time he contacted me to put a deal together to buy all his excess and obsolete inventory.
Since this was Jake’s personal ride that got sold to the ski dealer and it was never sold or used since then means Jake was most likely the last person to ride this board. In 2011 Jake was shown this board and told the story to see if he could authenticate the board and more importantly the rare white bindings.
Jake remembered the board and legitimized the story which creates a bloodline lineage to this board that can be traced to Jake himself. At the time of showing Jake this board I had him sign it (photos available upon request) everyone knows these boards are rare but with the original white front binding which Jake said there may have been five boards made with the white binding and the history and condition of this board makes it a one of a kind opportunity to own a piece of history. This board was first shown in 2012 shortly thereafter reproductions of the white binding started to surface,
This board is 100% original with no reproduction parts. The white binding is yellowing on the top side. The backside is white but has a rougher feel from age. The binding is still pliable, could still be ridden today.
Rear binding is original brown rubber strap with “Burton” silkscreened on strap. 80% of the ink is gone but the clear outline of the word “Burton” is crisp is original and shows signs of oxidation. Thumbscrews are in excellent condition with only minor signs of oxidation.
The fins are clean and straight, the fin mounting hardware is all original with the red cap nuts all in excellent condition. The rope is 70’s era braided orange rope with the red plastic handle.
The board is in good to excellent condition with near new appearance with only slight signs of weathering in the ink. All words are crisp and clear and easily readable.
The signature is an authentic Jake Burton signature, the base is in excellent condition with a hot wax job that was never scraped. The deckmat is crisp and soft but it could use a good cleaning. With the exception of the slight weathering of the ink and missing ink on rear binding this board could be called excellent for the purpose of sale, we’ll call it good condition.
Collectors, please note, Salty Peaks Snowboard Shop has a mission statement to document and preserve snowboard history and does not engage in the selling of vintage snowboards from the Utah Snowboard Museum. Most of the boards on this site are privately owned and priced according to rarity and condition. In most cases, they are not intended to sell but to educate fellow collectors of the more rare and hard to find snowboards out there, along with potential value of such boards. Prices are set to discourage purchase, but as time catches up to value, these prices may not seem so far off in the future. If you are interested in selling a board of this caliber, please contact the curator of the Utah Snowboard Museum, Dennis Nazari. If you are in need of period correct bindings, parts, or hardware, also contact the museum for availability; or 801-273-8770
