Vintage 1982 Variflex Snowslider Snowboard
In the early 80s the Variflex skateboard company attempted to enter the snowboard market with this direct knockoff of the Burton Backhill, but this attempt fell short as this board was only produced for a few seasons and in limited numbers. It is a rarely seen board. This model has a painted wood base and topsheet with precedes the rarer formica model.
This board is in good condition overall. The topsheet graphics are intact with only minor imperfections, there are signs of weathering and several small hairline cracks in the graphics. There are several wear marks on the tip through the word “snow” and the “s” in slider.
There is edge wear around the whole board. The deckmat is in excellent condition, the front foot may have been trimmed on the lower right corner. The rope is in excellent condition and the handle is in good condition, there is some discoloration and UV damage, both are completely original.
The overall look of the board is good but upon closer inspection you can see edge wear and weathering of the paint. The base is in fair condition with edge wear around all edges, several scratches that have removed paint but the 3 groomed channels in the base are intact and straight with no damage.
This board is more common than the formica base snow slider but is a pivotal point in snowboard history.
Collectors, please note, Salty Peaks Snowboard Shop has a mission statement to document and preserve snowboard history and does not engage in the selling of vintage snowboards from the Utah Snowboard Museum. Most of the boards on this site are privately owned and priced according to rarity and condition. In most cases, they are not intended to sell but to educate fellow collectors of the more rare and hard to find snowboards out there, along with potential value of such boards. Prices are set to discourage purchase, but as time catches up to value, these prices may not seem so far off in the future. If you are interested in selling a board of this caliber, please contact the curator of the Utah Snowboard Museum, Dennis Nazari. If you are in need of period correct bindings, parts, or hardware, also contact the museum for availability; or 801-273-8770
Happy hunting and enjoy!
