Winterstick Vintage 1980 Roundtail Yellow Snowboard
With over 1,000 vintage boards on display at Salty Peaks Snowboard Specialty Shop we are often asked “what’s the oldest snowboard?” to answer, we ask “what do you consider a snowboard? Does it have something you hold in your hand like a rope or handle? Or is it a freehand ridden board, like a surfboard? If your answer is a freehand powder surfboard, the first was Wayne Stoveken, who in 1972 rode the first winterstick powder surfboards in the Wasatch Range” Winterstick founder Dimitrije Milovich was on that hike in the East coast surfer turned inventor started the Winterstick company right here in Salt Lake City. The first production boards were offered in a roundtail and swallowtail models. Early boards had the powder brake, that stopped a runaway board if you fell off of it while riding. The base skeg helped the board track straight in deep powder, in 1975 Demetrije was using metal edges and p-tex bases. By 1980 “sticking” was what the cool kids were doing as an underground movement had been created around the snow surf company called Winterstick.
At the dawn of “skiboarding”, as coined by Tom Sims and ”sticken” the term used by Dimetrije Milovich’s faithful Winterstickers. There was a new term emerging called snowboarding. Dimitrije Milovich was the first to build a snow-surfer that you stood sideways on and didn’t use a hand held steering device like a rope and handle. In 1972 Dimitrije was prototyping boards with p-tex bases and metal edges at Alta and flagstaff bowl well before most had ever heard of sticken, skiboarding, or snowboarding.
This is a very nice 1980 Winterstick Roundtail in excellent condition. Comes with the powder skeg with the snow brake release. This is all original with no reproduction or aftermarket parts. The base is in excellent condition with no vacuum bumps or depressions. The skeg is straight and clean. The white urethane damper is rare but is missing a ½ x ¼ chunk near the mounting screw. The top sheet is in excellent condition with all epoxy traction bumps intact outside of needing a good cleaning. It’s nearly new condition. It’s imprinted serial number, the last two digits indicate the year of production.
There is an insignia in red near the nose that was applied after production. This board is rare in any condition and its very difficult to find them in this good of condition with all original parts and not modified.
Collectors, please note, Salty Peaks Snowboard Shop has a mission statement to document and preserve snowboard history and does not engage in the selling of vintage snowboards from the Utah Snowboard Museum. Most of the boards on this site are privately owned and priced according to rarity and condition. In most cases, they are not intended to sell but to educate fellow collectors of the more rare and hard to find snowboards out there, along with potential value of such boards. Prices are set to discourage purchase, but as time catches up to value, these prices may not seem so far off in the future. If you are interested in selling a board of this caliber, please contact the curator of the Utah Snowboard Museum, Dennis Nazari. If you are in need of period correct bindings, parts, or hardware, also contact the museum for availability; or 801-273-8770
